SPARTA, NJ – A man from North Bergan faces a number of charges in Sparta because his license plates lights were out.  On January 27 around 1:18 a.m. Sparta Police Officer Tom Herd and Cpl. Rob Fraser stopped a 2007 Saturn driving on Route 15 North because of the light issue police report.

As Ivan Perales reached the boarder of Lafayette Township, the Sparta Police Officers pulled him over.  When the officers spoke with the 41-year-old they immediately smelled raw marijuana, police report. 

The officers searched Perales’ car and found a glass container of marijuana, a smoking pipe and other related paraphernalia.  Perales was taken into custody and brought to Sparta Police Department headquarters where he was processed.

Perales was charged with possession of under 50 grams of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.  He was also ticketed for maintenance of lamps, driving while suspended and controlled dangerous substance in a motor vehicle. 

Perales was released pending a court date.
