SPARTA, NJ – Two people are facing drug charges after being stopped because their bike carrier blocked the car’s rear license plate. According to police Cpl. Marc Rubino stopped Orest Kalni, 27 on October 13 around 11 a.m.
When Rubino approached Kalni the officer smelled raw marijuana in the car. Kalni of Woodbridge and the passenger Olga Shevchuk, 27, of Brooklyn, NY were asked to get out of the car while it was searched by Rubino and Sparta Police Officer Guido, police report.
The officers found a bag of marijuana, a metal marijuana grinder, rolling papers, a small ziplock bag containing cocaine and a doctor’s prescription note folded and containing marijuana, according to police.
Both the driver and passenger were brought to Sparta Police Department headquarters for processing. Shevchuk was charged with possession of under 50 grams of marijuana, possession of cocaine and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Kalni was charged with possession of cocaine, possession of under 50 grams of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a controlled dangerous substance in a motor vehicle and unclear plates.
They were both released pending a court date.
