SPARTA, NJ – A driver from Lake Hopatcong caught the attention of Sparta police when he nearly ran into a guardrail and rock wall, on November 10 around 6 p.m.  Sparta Police Officer Scott Elig stopped a green Toyota Tacoma driven by Vernon Rolstad on Glen Road, police say.

When Elig spoke with the 52-year-old, the officer smelled alcohol in the car.  Sparta Sgt. Fraser, Officer Favaro and Officer May all arrived to provide assistance as Rolstad was given a field sobriety test, police report. 

Rolstad was taken into custody and brought to the Sparta police department headquarters for processing and breath testing.  Rolstad was charged with failure to maintain a lane, careless driving and driving while intoxicated.

Rolstad was released to a sober adult with a court date.
