SPARTA, NJ – After a two-car accident on Main Street a Newton man was charged with several DWI related offenses. On January 13 around 5:34 p.m. Sparta police responded to a call of an accident at the intersection of Main Street and Town Center Drive, near the Stop and Shop police report.
One car had struck the back of another, police report. Sparta Cpl Dan Elig arrived to investigate and, after speaking with both drivers, suspected the driver that caused the accident James Roodenburg, was intoxicated.
Roodenburg, 51, was asked to perform field sobriety tests. He was then taken into custody and brought to Sparta Police Department headquarters for processing and breath testing. Roodenburg was charged with driving while intoxicated, DWI within 1000 feet of a school, careless driving, unclear plates, failure to have a street address on driver’s license.
He was released several hours later to a sober adult pending a court date.
Police said there were no injuries associated with the car accident. Police Officer Tom Herd assisted with the investigation.
