SPARTA, NJ – A man from Rockaway Park, NY is facing drug charges after getting stopped for speeding. On March 4, around 2 a.m. Sparta Police Officer Erick Finley stopped John Martin on Route 15 on Sparta Junction, according to police.
When Finley spoke with the 25-year-old driver he smelled raw marijuana coming from the car. Martin and the passenger were asked to get out of the car so it could be searched. Finley found a small amount of marijuana behind the rear seat, according to police.
Finley suspected there was additional marijuana in the trunk and, after getting a warrant, continued a search of the 2-16 Subaru. A baggie of marijuana was found in the trunk according to police. Martin claimed the pot was his.
Martin was taken into custody and taken to Sparta Police Department headquarters for processing. Martin was charged with possession of under 50 grams of marijuana. He also got tickets for speeding, improper display/unclear plates, possession of controlled dangerous substance in a motor vehicle. He was released pending a court date.
