SPARTA, NJ – Demarest Road is closed, near Sparta Redi-Mix, because of an overturned dump truck.  At approximately 11:15 a.m. police report the driver Max Vanegas of Newark was attempting to turn from Houses Corner Road onto Demarest Road. Venagas told police he heard a “loud noise from the front end of the truck…as if something had broken.”

The truck is a 1993 Western Tri-Axel dump truck, according to police, carrying a load of sand.

Vanegas, 25, said he then “lost all control” of the truck and it then veered to the right where it hit a telephone pole, went into the ditch and rolled back onto the road blocking both lanes, police report.  The sand spilled onto the road.

Additionally, the broken telephone pole brought down wire causing a power outage in the area.  Fuel spilled from the truck as well, police report.

The driver, Vanegas, was evaluated at the scene by the Sparta Ambulance Squad for minor cuts, but refused additional medical attention.

As of 2:30 p.m. police report the road remained closed while JCP&L repaired the damaged pole and downed wires.  The Sussex County Haz-mat team and a private contractor were on the scene to clean up the fuel spill.

Police are still investigating the accident.

On August 19 a dump truck rolled over into a pond at the intersection of Route 15 and Route 181, approximately one and a half miles from today’s accident, causing the road to be closed for several hours.
