SPARTA, NJ -A Sparta police officers rescued two dogs from a house fire on the afternoon of April 13.  Around 3:30 p.m.  Cpl. Rick Smith broke the rear sliding glass door of 65 Hillside Road to be sure no one was in the house that was on fire, police report.

With flames and smoke coming from the second story the police checked and found only the dogs at home.  After getting the dogs out the police were able to get much of the fire knocked down with their fire extinguisher and garden hose found in the back of the house, according to police.

The Sparta Fire Department arrived and took over, completely extinguishing the fire. The Fire Inspector did not find the fire to be of suspicious origin.  It appeared to have been started by a cigarette thrown from the second floor, according to police.

The Ogdensburg and Andover Fire Departments helped at the scene.
