SPARTA, NJ - A Teaneck man is facing charges of driving while intoxicated after catching the attention of Sparta police on Route 15. For a change of pace Sparta police Cpl. Dan Elig stopped Richard McNeil for driving 25 mph below the posted speed limit of 55 mph on December 12 at 11:52 p.m. according to police.
Not only was he driving very slowly, Elig saw McNeil constantly crossing the white broken lines, police report. Elig pulled McNeil over near the Blue Heron overpass. After speaking with him Elig suspected McNeil was intoxicated, police report.
McNeil performed field sobriety tests, was subsequently taken into custody and transported to Sparta Police Department headquarters. He was breath tested and processed and released hours later to a sober adult pending a court date.
McNeil was charged with DWI, failure to maintain lane, careless driving, operating at slow speeds blocking traffic and DWI within 1000 feet of a school.
Police Officer Arlene Lippencott assisted with the investigation.
