SPARTA, NJ - A Sparta man faces charges of driving while intoxicated after his erratic driving prompted a call to police on November 25.  Sparta police responded to a report of an erratic driver on Stanhope Road, which included the license plate information, around 7:48 p.m. police report.

Sparta Cpl. Joe Anotnello spotted the 2007 Land Rover on as it turned from Park Road onto East Shore Trail, driving onto the wrong side of the road.  Antonello stopped the car being driven by 52-year-old Billy Richardson, police said.

After speaking Richardson, Antonello suspected the driver  was intoxicated.  He had Richardson perform a series of field sobriety tests then took him into custody.  Richardson was transported to Sparta Police Department headquarters for processing and breath testing.

Richardson was charged with DWI, careless driving and failure to keep right.

Richardson was released several hours later to a sober adult pending a court date.
