SPARTA, NJ – A Sparta women ended up in trouble after falsely reporting she was hit by another vehicle.  On August 13 around 11:40 p.m. Officer Taylor May went to the scene of a reported hit and run accident on Route 517 near the Sparta Middle School, police said.

Jamie Lewis, 21, told May a tan colored sedan hit her Ford SUV on the passenger side and continued heading toward Ogdensburg, police said.

After taking her report, May did not see any debris where Lewis said the accident happened.  On the other side of the road, May found tire tracks that went off the road and into a telephone pole.  It was there May found parts of the car consistent with Lewis hitting the pole, police said.

Lewis was asked to come to the Sparta Police Department Headquarters. After being read her rights, Lewis was asked if she wanted to discuss what really happened at which point she admitted there was no other car involved. According to police Lewis said she went off the road and hit the pole.

Lewis was charged with making a false report to law enforcement, careless driving and failing to maintain a lane.  She was given a court date and released.
