SPARTA, NJ - One person was injured in a three car accident on Route 15 Thursday evening. Sparta police responded to an accident on the southbound side of Route 15 at the intersection of Primrose Lane.
The chain of events began around 4:45 p.m., with 69-year-old Elizabeth Lehmann of Rockaway crashing her 2010 Toyota into the back of a 2013 Kia being driven by Sparta resident Balvaneda Torres. Torres had slowed down to turn right onto Primrose Lane when Lehmann hit her from behind, according to police.
The impact pushed Torres's Kia into a third car, a 2014 Dodge being driven by Ashlie Qualagari. The 30-year-old Vernon resident had been stopped at the stop sign on Primrose Lane, waiting to turn onto Route 15, police said.
After the impact, the Toyota driven by Lehmann, continued down Route 15 for about 200 feet before bursting into flames, causing the road to be closed temporarily. Lehmann was able to get out of the car without injury, police said.
Torres, in the second vehicle, was taken to Newton Medical Center by Sparta Ambulance complaining of pain. Additional information about Torres condition was unavailable. The other two drivers were uninjured according to police.
The Sparta Fire Department put out the burning car.
Lehmann was ticketed for following too closely and careless driving.
