SPARTA, NJ – A Vernon man has been charged with driving while intoxicated after he hit a curb and disabled his Jeep. On November 30 around 11;20 p.m. Sparta Police Officer Ericks Finley found the Robert Houdershieldt, 44, sitting in his Grand Cherokee on the Route 15 southbound ramp, police say.
When Finley spoke with the driver, Houdershieldt told the officer he was on the phone with AAA. Finley smelled alcohol and asked Houdershieldt to get out of the car, police report.
Sparta Sgt. Schomp assisted as Finley gave the driver a series of field sobriety tests. Houdershieldt was taken in to custody and brought to Sparta Police Department headquarters.
Houdershieldt was charged with DWI, careless driving, failing to keep right. He was released with a court date.
