SPARTA, NJ - This year the Mohawk Avenue School will be the educational home of Sparta's third grade students. Principal Laura Trent has been overseeing the re-organization and renovation of the building that has housed the district's Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten programs for the past two years.
Renovations include refinishing the gymnasium floor, refurbishing the kitchen, renovating the old locker rooms into office space for the child study team and guidance counselor. There is also a new library in the space off of the cafeteria that previously housed the kindergarten wrap around program. Students will use the classrooms on the upstairs level of the building. Teachers have been busy preparing and decorating their rooms and lockers for the third grade students.
Trent said, "I am looking forward to a wonderful school year with the third grade students. The district staff has worked hard to complete renovations at Mohawk Avenue School. Thanks to district staff, parents, and teachers that helped to make the opening of Mohawk Avenue School go so smoothly. It will be a great year."
Last spring the members of the board of education had decided to redistrict the grades again, despite having rejected a full day kindergarten program. The Pre-Kindergarten and half-day Kindergarten programs will join the first and second grades at the Alpine elementary school with Principal Guiseppe Leone.
The fourth and fifth grade students will remain Helen Morgan elementary school though they will have a new principal. Doug Layman and Michael Gregory have exchanged postions with Gregory now at the helm of the Sparta Middle School.
Notable change to the high school is the addition of a six minute homeroom at the beginning of the day. The track reconstruction project is ongoing.
