VERNON, NJ – The Sparta High School ski team sent skiers to the New Jersey State Races at Mountain Creek. Tuesday, Feb 23 was the giant slalom portion and Friday, Feb 26 was the slalom races. The boys finished with a third place finish in the Public School division. The girls took fourth also in the Public School division.
Shannon Kaminski finished 12 in the giant slalom and seventh in the slalom. Juliana Kaminski took 15 in the giant slalom and 12 in the slalom. Margaret Zembrzuska and Polina Novozhilova also contributed to the strong finish for the girls.
The boys put together a combined time of 12:24:30, “the best showing in the state combined race in years,” according to coach Kyle Markovich.
The top boys finishers were Brendan Muhs, Rex Anderson, Chester Sears, Jack McGovern and Jared Kish.
The Race of Champions was held on Saturday, Feb 30. Sparta had six skiers qualify to represent the Spartans. Shannon Kaminski, Novozhilova, Juliana Kaminski, Zembrzuska, Muhs and Anderson all qualified for the state regional team.
Shannon Kaminski was named to the second team All-State with a 12 place finish for the season. She qualified for the New Jersey High School State team and will be competing with the state team at Eastern Regionals in New Hampshire later this month.
Novozhilova and Muhs “also had a great showing,” said Markovich. They were named to the third team All-State.
Markovich said, “This year was a year filled with ups and downs with weather, injuries, and finish results but I absolutely enjoyed every minute of coaching a fine group of young men and women. Each of you should be proud of what you have accomplished this year and strive for greater in the future both in ski racing and other endeavors.”
