SPARTA, NJ – It was an unusual finish to the Sparta-Morris Hills softball game at Sparta. The tie game stretched into ten innings, requiring an International Tie Breaker before Sparta finally broke the stalemate for a 2-1 finish.
An International Tie Breaker is triggered when the tie extends from regulation play in the seventh inning through the ninth inning. In the 10 inning the team at bat gets to place a runner on second to try to bring her home. All other rules remain the same, until there is a winner.
Sparta got on the board in the second inning. Morris Hills tied it up in the fifth.
Paige Smith pitched all 10 innings for Sparta striking out 12 batters, giving up the only run, three hits and five walks. Smith also had a double and an RBI.
It was Katherine Campione who scored the winning run on a dropped third strike and wild throw.
Sparta's record moves to 9-1. They play Kittatinny on Tuesday.
