LINCROFT, NJ – Helen Morgan fourth-grade students won the New Jersey Fourth Grade chess championship at the NJ Grade Level Championships held at Brookdale Community College on Nov. 22. The annual tournament decides the champion at each grade.

This win represents the 21 title for a player from the Sparta Chess Club, once more affirming their ranking among the best public school chess programs in New Jersey.

Additional Sparta team members won awards as well. The Alpine first-grade children placed third, the Sparta Middle School seventh-grade team took second place and the Sparta High School 10th grade students also earned second place honors.

Among the other teams competing at this competitive level were Princeton Day School, Princeton Charter School, Hi Tech School and Christian Brothers Academy. 

The fourth and 10 grade teams have recently traveled to Orlando, Fla. for the National Grade Level Championships.
