SPARTA, NJ- Every Friday evening in the summer the Sparta VFW hosts a barbecue dinner for the community.  For eight dollars you can select a hamburger, hotdog, sausage and peppers or chicken, along with potato salad, cole slaw and dessert.  You also have a choice of beverage; beer wine or soda.  You can dine in the VFW hall or take a meal home with you.

Next Friday, July 18 all of the proceeds of the evening’s event will go to benefit the Friends of Sal.  This will be the last fundraiser for this cause until September.  To date the various fundraising efforts including a Softball car wash, Summer Solstice yoga event, Elks dinner, Kiwanis Barbecue, Sparta FOP dinner dance,   Knights of Columbus breakfast and others have raised nearly $30,000.

Early in the morning of May 18, Sparta resident Salvatore “Sal” Sarrecchia and his wife Nicole were involved in an automobile accident on I-287 in Bernards Township that appears to have been initiated by a drunk driver.  As a result of the accident, Sal passed away leaving his wife Nicole seriously injured and their four children without a father.  A group of family friends and many Sparta service organizations and individuals have joined forces to assist the Sarrecchia family in this time of need.
