SPARTA, NJ – Sparta High School winter track sent two students to the Meet of Champions in Toms River. On Feb 27 Cayleigh Glew and Andrew Pondiscio competed against the best in the state. Glew in the Girls 55 Meter Hurdles and Ponsicsio in the Boys High Jump.
To qualify for NJSIAA Meet of Champions they had to finish in the top six of NJSIAA Section 1 Group 2 Championship. Glew finished third in her group in 55 Meter Hurdles with a time of 8.68. Pondiscio had finished third in the high jump clearing a height of six feet.
At the Meet of Champions Glew finished 23 in the state. Pondiscio left with a 21 place finish.
Coach Robert Gilmartin said, “Coach Heckman and I are extremely proud of Cayleigh and Andrew. They both worked extremely hard this winter. Competing in the Meet of Champions against the best athletes at their event is quite an honor and these two are very deserving of it. We hope they are able to build on their successful winter and have a successful spring season.”
Glew said, “Qualifying for the meet of champions was such a great feeling. Being able to compete against the best girls in the state was a great experience and I loved the intensity. You could really tell how hard everyone worked to get there. I’m hoping to qualify again in the spring for the 100 hurdles.”
“Competing at the Meet of Champions was a tremendous experience,” said Pondiscio. “Just making it to the MOC was an achievement in itself. It was nice to see all of my hard work throughout the season pay. Off. Going up against the top athletes in the state in front of such a big crowd was definitely an unforgettable experience. I hope to compete at the Meet of Champions again next year as a senior.”
