SPARTA, NJ - The main gym at Sparta High School was filled with young basketball players last week. Girls from second through ninth grade had a chance to spend the week learning drills and honing skills with the high school players at basketball camp run by varsity coach Catherine Willie.

All week the girls worked on all aspects of the game: dribbling, passing, rebounding, defense and shooting, according to Willie.  The week culminated in a WMBA 3-on-3 tournament and grade level competitions of free throws, one-on-ones , block to block shots and elbow shots.

"The campers were competitive in all of these," Willie said.

There were several awards given to the campers:

  • Most Valuable Camper for second through fifth grade went to Sloane Dengler.
  • Overall Camp Most Valuable Player was seventh grade student Allie Sweeney
  • WNBA 3-on-3 Champion Teams was the Washington Mystics.
