SPARTA, NJ -The Sparta Township Ambulance Squad is celebrating their 70th anniversary.  The accomplishment was recognized with a proclamation presented to Captain Brad Erickson and First Lieutenant John McChensey at the Sparta Township Council  meeting on Tuesday night.

Mayor Gil Gibbs read the proclamation to the two and many of the squad members present in the council chambers.  Police Chief Neil Spidaletto was also in the audience for the commemoration.

The proclamation read, in part, "the Township of Sparta takes pride in having one of the most outstanding EMS squads in the state of New Jersey...The Sparta community has benefited for the past 70 years from the knowledge, skills and dedication of these emergency medical responders as they work to ensure caring and compassionate treatment."

"Many towns are hurting for members," Gibbs said, "Sparta's squad is doing well and has a waiting list for its junior members."

Erickson confirmed there are approximately 80 members with 25 cadets, the maximum number they allow.  Additionally, there are high school students waiting for a spot to become a cadet.

"We have an excellent feeder program beginning with the preschools in town," McChensey said.

"We are blessed to have the ambulance squad to serve our community," Township Manager Bill Close said.  "Thank you for your time and your service."

"I want to thank the township council and the community for their ongoing support for the last 70 years," Erickson said.  "Here's to 70 more."
