SPARTA, NJ — State Champion and national competitor Sparta High School track athletes were recognized at the township council meeting on Tuesday night for having won the NJSIAA Group 2 State Championship. Gianna Macones, Carlie Wilson, Zoe Canzoniero and Emily Hosker received proclamations and gifts from deputy Mayor Christine Quinn and councilman Gil Gibbs on behalf of the township.

Proud parents and coaches Richard Heckman and Elizabeth Shaffer joined the girls in the council chambers as they received accolades for having been the first girls team from Sparta High School to win a state title. Making it even more noteworthy is that they took home the trophy with only three team members.

Macones and Wilson represented Sparta High School at the NJSIAA Meet of Champions on June 9, having finished at the top of their events in the Group 2 Championships.

The four girls traveled to Greensboro, North Carolina to represent their school at the New Balance Outdoor Nationals, reprising their trip to New York for the Indoor Nationals earlier this year. Macones, Wilson, Canzoniero and Kosker competed in the 4 x 100 meter shuttle hurdles. Macones also triple jumped and Wilson competed in the high jump.

“As you move ahead in your lives you can always look back on this with pride,” Quinn said.
