STOCKHOLM, NJ – The first round of the Sussex Cup pitted Sparta High School against High Point and Newton Lenape Valley against Vernon. The teams played at Skylands Ice World on Dec 26.
Taylor Zink, Newton Lenape Valley’s goalie stood on his head to keep them in the game stopping 60 shots.
The game remained scoreless until the third period. It was Liam Cherry’s power play goal that got Newton Lenape Valley the win. Cherry was assisted by Ryan Wanamaker and Kevin Rodriguez.
Sparta faced off against High Point for their first game of the Sussex Cup. High Point had the lead after two periods 2-1 but that would be it for High Point.
Sparta’s first goal came in the second period scored by Jeremy Dericks, assisted by Brendon Erickson.
The duo reversed in the third with Brendon Erickson scoring on an assist by Dericks. Sparta’s winning goal was scored unassisted by Andrew Lopuch.
Sparta was unable to capitalize on a Penalty shot early in the third by Sergei O’Sullivan.
Connor Erickson sealed the win with an empty net goal with less than a minute on the clock.
Dalton Schroepfer stopped 13 of HIgh Points shots. Sparta had 43 shots on goal.
All four teams will play again for the finals on Dec 31 at Skylands with Newton playing Sparta and Vernon playing High Point.
