Movie Review: "The Apparition" fails to scare

In this age of over the top torture movies with excessive blood and gore, the old standard of creepy hauntings has mostly fallen to the wayside. Ghostly shadows, flickering lights and misplaced objects are typical staples in movies involving hauntings and, in order for it to work, there must be a sense of danger. "The Apparition" tries and fails to be the latter kind of film.

Kelly (Twilight’s Ashley Greene) and Ben (Captain America’s Sebastian Stan) are your average twenty-something couple: they go to work every day, play nice with their neighbors and shop for camping equipment and lawn decorations at the local megastore. While settling in at their new house, strange events begin occurring. Formerly locked doors end up wide-open, wooden coat hangers become twisted, strange mold begins to disperse throughout the house. After one scare too many, and a timely confession or two from Ben, the couple get in touch with Ben’s college buddy and supernatural enthusiast Patrick (Harry Potter’s Tom Felton) for help.

They learn that the apparition that is haunting them, released during a supernatural experiment years earlier by Ben and Patrick, feeds on their fear and will stop at nothing to torment them and gain permanent access to our world. Now, the trio will have to fight for their survival and for their sanity.

First time director and screenwriter Todd Lincoln’s script is convoluted and clunky. What appear to be plot points show up throughout the film never to be mentioned again or they remain unexplained. The scares, if they can even be called that, can be seen coming a mile away and give no payoff. The ending leaves the audience completely unsatisfied and forcing back an eye-roll; many people in the audience groaned and said, “Really?” once the credits started to roll. The cast is filled with some of Hollywood’s up and coming young actors whose talents are truly wasted in this film.

"The Apparition" is rated PG-13 for terror/frightening images and some sensuality and runs 82 minutes.
