In a world beset by problems of every kind imaginable—bad weather (too hot, cold, dry, damp etc.), awful traffic day in and day out, wrong viewpoints on just about anything under the sun, disregard for the wisdom of one’s elders and betters, and much, much more—where do we turn for common-sense answers?
TAPinto Sparta and Newton is proud to present a unique perspective on these issues in the story ‘The Mighty Barribal’ by Dutch graphic novelist Marten Toonder. It’s a timeless story about perception and reality of (political) power set in a fanciful but very recognizable world, and will appear in serialized form from now until Election Day.
The main characters are Olivier B. Bomble, an affluent gentleman ready to let his unfettered opinions loose on the many iniquities that life has to offer, and the Mighty Barribal, a mysterious giant ready to put the world on its head. As you can imagine, this is going to be a battle for the ages.
At a slight remove from this great struggle stands a third character, Ocelot, a sharp little tomcat and Olivier Bomble’s (Squire Bomble to friends and readers) oldest friend and sidekick. He’ll prove pivotal in the dismantling of Barribal’s surprisingly effective operation as well as discovering the role played by the opportunistic Professor Zicboq, a genius when he is on your side but otherwise nobody’s best friend.
‘Tales from the life of Olivier B. Bomble, gentleman,’ was serialized in Dutch newspapers for many years, and Squire Bomble, his good friend Ocelot and many others have become household names in the Netherlands. This is their first appearance in the US after the successful translation into English by Adrian Meerman, a Sparta resident.
