The Great Sparta Duck Race
One can't compare it to Churchill Downs because there are no mint juleps served, but there will be thrills aplenty when Sparta Kiwanis hosts their own "Kenducky Derby" at Station Park Thursday May 13th . When the bugle sounds "Post Time"at 2:30, Sparta day crowds will line the banks of the Wallkill to cheer their entries floating toward the finish line at the tenth annual running of the Great Annual Duck Race.
This is the premier event sponsored annually by the Sparta Kiwanis to support their college scholarships program. To date the Sparta Kiwanis has donated almost $500,000 to worthy graduates of our local high schools, Sparta High, Pope John, and Sussex tech.
Each year one can find a Kiwanian selling tickets to buy a "duck"which will be numbered and entered with a chance to be a "Lucky Duck" and win a first place prize of $500. Second and third place finish in the money also. Spectators will thrill to the sight of 500 "Rubber Duckies" jockeying for position as they are propelled by the northbound current of the Wallkill River toward the finish line.
The Sparta Kiwanis is happy and proud to support several service projects in their township. Along with their annual scholarship program Kiwanians can be found sponsoring senior citizen picnics, ecological clean-ups and flower plantings, food pantry collections, and assisting at various local events. Members meet weekly at Homer's Restaurant on the Newton-Sparta Road opposite the Florence Burd School Thursdays at 7 p.m.. Anyone interested in learning more about ,and hopefully join, the Sparta Kiwanis are encouraged to contact Stu Stuart at 973 - 459 - 0194
