To the Editor:
Grassroots support is growing for excluding Picatinny Arsenal from the Defense Base Closure and Realignment Commission (BRAC) list of targets for closure.
Back in June, the Assembly passed a resolution which Assemblywoman Alison McHose and I sponsored calling on Congress to exclude Picatinny Arsenal when considering future defense budget cuts. The Senate passed one as well and Senator Steve Oroho was a sponsor.
It was important for the Legislature to take a proactive stand to support Picatinny and I was proud to be a part of that effort. Picatinny is crucial for our economy with the jobs the base provides both directly and indirectly in Morris, Sussex, and Warren Counties. In addition, the work being done there is providing our Armed Forces with the advanced weaponry and technology they need to win in the war against terrorism and protect our great nation.
There are also two State bodies working to fight any efforts to close New Jersey’s military instillations: the Council on Armed Forces and Veterans Affairs and the New Jersey Military Installation Growth and Development Task Force which is chaired by Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno.
Now Sussex County has followed suit and has gone on the record to protect Picatinny. I urge every municipal governing body in Northwest New Jersey to do the same.
