WESTWOOD, NJ – The Newton High School football team is headed to the NJSIAA North 1, Group 2 finals after defeating Westwood on Friday night 21-6. The undefeated Braves went into the semifinal round against top ranked Cardinals with a fourth seed.
The Braves returned to the field where they suffered a 63-12 loss to Westwood in the North 1, Group 2 semis in 2013, but this is a far different team now and the Braves were determined to make this game different too.
Newton started it off with a Jonathan Van Ness touchdown on an 11 yard pass from Newton Quarterback Luke Young. Newton’s kicker hit the extra point to make it 7-0 in the first quarter.
Westwood’s defense had an early hold on Chase Cramer. Cramer was able to break through in the second quarter with an 18 yard run for his first touchdown of the night. Cramer would rack up 158 yards and two trips to the end zone before the final whistle.
Young had a busy night with more than 50 yards in the air, 38 yards on the ground and a touchdown to his name.
In the second half Newton continued to dominate with a 71-yard Cramer run for the final Brave touchdown.
Nico Sebastiano connected twice for 20 yards.
Defensively Wyatt McCarthy contributed with six hard hits. He also messed with Westwood's offense creating a fumble and grabbing in interception. Troy Babcock and Van Ness were each credited with a sack.
Will Larsen led the defense with seven tackles and with five minutes left in the game, Larsen intercepted the ball on the three and ran back to the 47 yard line.
The Braves even blocked the Cardinal’s only extra point attempt.
Newton heads to the finals with an 11-0 record going 5-0 in their division. They are scheduled to play second-seeded Lakeland in two weeks on Thursday, November 30.
