SPARTA, NJ - On February 14, at approximately 4:59 p.m. Sparta police received a 911 call reporting an erratic driver.  The caller stated the vehicle was all over the road and possibly struck a guard rail on Lafayette Road approaching the center of town.

Cpl. Frank Schomp located the vehicle parked in the rear lot of Burke’s Liquors on Sparta Avenue.  Police Officer Rick Smith determined the driver, 56 year-old Richard Greco of Sparta, was impaired.  Greco was given a series of Field Sobriety Tests.

Greco’s condition deteriorated as these tests were being given and the Sparta First Aid Squad responded and transported Mr. Greco to Newton Medical Center.  A blood sample was obtained from Mr. Greco while at the hospital.

Greco was charged with DWI Alcohol and/or Drugs and Careless Driving.  He was released to a family member at the hospital pending a court date.  Sgt. Keith Hannam assisted with the arrest.
