VERNON, NJ – Winter finally arrived allowing the Sparta High School ski team to start their season.  They started off with a strong showing it the first two Giant Slalom races.  The  women’s team took third and the men placed fourth in both races. 

On Tuesday night it was a sister combination as Shannon and Juliana Kaminski took sixth and 11 place. Sophomore Serena Calarati stepped up and skied her first varsity race on Tuesday night with an impressive finish,” said Coach Kyle Markovich.

Wednesday night freshman Polina Novozhilova led the women with an eighth place finish and a combined time of 1:31.68.

Markovich said, “The team looks to be a strong competitor in a talented division this year.”    

The men were led by Freshman Brendan Muhs.  He finished 10 on Tuesday and 12 on Wednesday.  Right behind him were experienced teammates Rex Anderson, Matt McAdnris and Chester Sears.  They had a team time on 3:13.67 on Tuesday and 5:56.72 on Wednesday.

“The men show promise to compete with the top teams in the state this year under the leadership and skill of their veterans and talent of rookie teammates,” said Markovich.

The JV men's and women's teams competed in their first race on Wednesday night.  Valeria Shumskays led the women with a third place finish. Tyler Milway led the men with a 13th place finish.  Brendan Huff, Morgan McBride, Bridget Van Voorst, Bailey Plotts, and Hailey Koerner all raced in their first every ski race and “show a bright future in ski racing.”
