Before a vote on allowing undocumented immigrants to receive New Jersey driver’s licenses, Assemblyman Hal Wirths (R-Sussex, Warren, Morris) advocated for requiring background checks for driver’s license applicants.
He also raised concerns about fraud, citing problems in other states and recent cases here in New Jersey, and lamented the lack of debate on what he called one of the most important bills the legislature has voted on in years.

Under Wirths’ proposal, every driver’s license applicant, regardless of status, would be checked through the New Jersey Wanted Person and Criminal Justice Information systems in the files of the National Crime Information Center.
