4 Fantastic Fall Lawn Tips for New Jersey Homes

No time for slacking on lawn care! Read these 4 fab tips for greener grass come Spring!

You’ve spent Spring and Summer sweating over the care of your lawn.  When cooler weather comes to New Jersey, it’s time to sit back and relax, right?  Not so fast!  Late-season yard care plays an important role in overall lawn health, and minimizes the time and effort you’ll spend on lawn maintenance come Spring.  Team Nest Builder recommends these 4 measures for ensuring the grass will always be greener on the side of YOUR New Jersey home:

Mow, Mow, Mow the Lawn

Continue mowing the lawn as new growth appears, cutting the grass to a height of 3 inches. Cutting shorter “scalps” the turf, stressing the roots.  As leaves drop, mulch them right into the lawn along with grass clippings--just don’t let the leaves pile up!

Fertile Soil

Apply fertilizer several times throughout Fall to help your New Jersey lawn recover from summer stress; improve root structure and density; and help Spring growth.

Whack Those Weeds

It’s no time to slack off on weed-killing!  For large infestations, consider a broadleaf herbicide.  Not big on herbicides?  Dig out weeds by hand, making sure you pull out the root system.

Sow the Seeds

Some pros recommend seeding a lawn in Fall.  Just don’t wait TOO long or the grass won’t establish by the time temperatures drop.  As for repairing dead patches, remove the grass down to the bare soil, use a rake to rough up the soil, then add seed.  Keep the soil moist but not drenched while the seeds germinate, around 10 to 15 days. After the grass begins to grow, water on a daily basis.
