Finding out a senior you love experienced a fall in their home feels terrible. Learning they laid on the floor for hours unable to get up, and that the fall could have been easily avoided feels far worse. Team Nest Builder’s Marketing Manager knows....her mother-in-law recently fell in her New Jersey home, and she experienced that exact scenario. That’s why today, Team Nest Builder is offering you tips on how to avoid ending up in that same situation. Whether your senior lives with you or alone, take these tips to heart!
Take Down Trips & Slips
Falls lead the list of home injury among seniors, so start here! Arrange furniture with clear pathways in mind. Position (or better yet, tack) electrical cords to the bottom of the wall. Remove throw rugs or use carpet tacks or double-sided tape to secure them. For the bathroom, place non-skid rugs on the floor and a rubber mat or adhesive non-slip strips to the shower floor or bathtub to prevent slipping. Next, hire a carpenter to install grab bars around the tub/shower and toilet for support. Lastly, consider purchasing a shower chair and installing a hand-held shower so seniors may bathe seated restfully.
Install the brightest bulbs allowed in lamps and light fixtures and place nightlights in rooms and hallways used after dark. Consider adding under-cabinet task lighting in the kitchen, and motion sensor lights outside the front and back doors and in the driveway.
Organize the kitchen such that items used most frequently lie within easy reach--no stooping or step stool needed! Consider installing Lazy Susans in corner cabinets and pull-out shelves beneath the counter for easier reaching.
For seniors with walkers or wheelchairs, consider adding ramps on entrance steps, and mini-ramps over high thresholds. “Swing-away” or “swing-clear” hinges on doors add two inches of width for easier passage.
Set the hot water heater to 120 degrees Fahrenheit or below to prevent scalds. Place handrails on both sides of stairs. Install smoke and carbon dioxide detectors on all levels of the home, as well as a lightweight, easy-to-use ABC-rated fire extinguisher in an easy-to-access place in the kitchen.
Only 55+ Need Apply
