SPARTA, NJ – Sparta Dairy will be returning to Sparta. The building with the familiar red roof will once again be a place of happiness that comes with ice cream.
New owners Sarah and Anthony Ziccardi already own a business in town, Anthony Ziccardi Studios. They have memories of going to Sparta Dairy as kids. Now their children are excited to have an ice cream shop in the family.
“The name brings those memories,” Sarah said explaining the name will stay. She is excited about having people “sit outside and enjoy the weather at the center of town,” with the library, playground, fields and basketball court all right there. They remember doing the same when they were growing up and want to help create memories for their children and the community.
Aside from the name, just about everything else will be new. From the parking lot and outdoor seating to the floors and paint and just about everything else, the old store will be new “with a rustic theme.”
Sarah said they are using local contractors to do the makeover. The extensive renovations have moved the anticipated opening date to February 28, leap year weekend. They expect to be open year round, seven days a week. Though they may cut back on hours or days in the winter depending on the customers.
“I like ice cream in the winter and people have told me they like ice cream in the winter,” Sarah said. They expect to have soft serve as well as hard ice cream but are not “100% sure of the additions.” They have been taking suggestions on the Sparta Dairy facebook page, noting a dairy free option has been big request. They are also not yet sure of the ice cream vendor and Sarah said they are expecting to do some “extensive taste testing” this fall.
It will be a family affair. Their two young boys have already decided they will be helping out. The six year old said “when it’s really busy at night I can go out and talk with the customers while they wait for their ice cream.”
The facebook page is also asking for the community to weigh in on a name for the mascot. Their boys have had suggestions but they are looking for more.
“We live in Sparta and are raising our family in Sparta and have another business in Sparta,” Sarah said. “We’re going to come up with something great in February.”
