SPARTA, NJ- Sparta Township is saying farewell to Jan Op’t Hof after 32 years of service to Sparta Township. Since 1990 Op’t Hof has been the Construction Official for Sparta.
“Jan is truly one of the cogs in the wheel that gets things done,” Sparta Township Manager Bill Close said. “It is not an easy job to go into people’s homes but he is ensuring people’s safety.”
“Congratulations on a long and outstanding service,” Mayor Molly Whilesmith said.
“It’s a lifetime,” Deputy Mayor Christine Quinn. “It’s not always an easy job.”
“I’ve been told that ‘Jan doesn’t say much but when he does you better listen,’” Op’t Hof said.
“The cover does not reveal the book,” Close said of the tall Op’t Hof. “He’s a gentle giant.”
Op’t Hof began in Sparta on February 1, 1987. He graduated from Orange County College with an A.A.S in Construction Technology. He continued on to get a state fire inspector license in 1989.
“We are sorry to see him go,” Close said, “but happy to know he can spend more time with his family.”
