NEWTON, NJ – The deadline for submitting candidate petitions to be on the ballot for the board of education is 4 p.m. on July 29.  According to the Sussex County Senior Deputy Clerk , Angela Rosa, the only person to have filed as of July 8 is incumbent Kim Bragg.

In Sparta, Bragg, Kelly McEvoy and Michael McGovern are up for reelection.  All three positions are for a three year term.

As of the 2018 election, school board candidates can have a three word slogan appear next to their name.  Up to three candidates can appear as a bracket on the ballot as well.

According to Rosa, candidates have up to seven days prior to the ballot position being drawn to notify the clerk of the of their desire to bracket with other candidates. Bracketed candidates can use the same slogan and will be drawn together for ballot position, appearing together on the ballot.


  • July 29 – petitions due to Sussex County Clerks’ office,
  • August 3 – deadline for candidates to bracket,
  • August 12 – ballot positions drawn for November General and School Board Election 3 p.m.
  • August 27 – last day for school board and independent candidates to withdraw (if a candidate withdraws by this date, a new nominating petition naming a replacement can be filed by Sept 3)
  • October 15 – Last day to register to vote in the November General Election – boards of election open extended hours for late registration.
  • October 29 – last day to apply by mail for Mail-in-Ballot for November General Elections
  • November 4 – last day to apply in person for a Mail-in-Ballot at County Clerk’s Office by 3 p.m.
  • November 5 – General Election
