NEWTON, NJ - Birth Haven is a shelter for Homeless Pregnant Women and their Babies located in Newton, NJ. It is a privately run, non-profit organization providing shelter, support and education for their residents.

Historically, Birth Haven has had a large holiday fundraising gala. For the third consecutive year, Birth Haven is raising funds in a more efficient way.

Co-chairman of the Board, John Ursin, explained that “We have great success with in person fundraisers, but we try to maximize every dollar we receive and event costs can consume 40-50% of the money raised. So for this effort we wanted to further maximize our efficiency by leveraging social media”.

The “Journey of Hope” drive is a holiday appeal asking the public to support our shelter and program for homeless pregnant women and babies. Rather than make it just a direct solicitation campaign, Birth Haven also created a series of documentary style videos.

These videos reveal the struggles, joys, and rewards of one Birth Haven mother and her first child as they confront serious health complications. You can visit to follow the episodes and donate, or see our posts via our social media channels. Executive Director, Tina Magarino said “the videos provide unique insight into the difficulties our Birth Haven residents face during their journey through homelessness and pregnancy. We hope people will be inspired to send the videos to their friends and circulate them on social media, raising awareness about Birth Haven and our program for ending the cycle of homelessness”.

The first of the 4 videos was released on the Monday after Thanksgiving and the rest will be posted every Monday thereafter for four consecutive weeks.

This approach will allow Birth Haven to use more than 95% of the proceeds to support the shelter. Tina Magarino explained that “many of the residents need basic help for themselves and their babies. This includes GEDs and resumes, as well as parenting, household finance, and cooking classes. Residents are required to either work, attend school or volunteer their time. And we have a mandatory savings program so many residents leave with funds to secure an apartment of their own”.

Birth Haven hopes that people will view the videos and be inspired to help. The need is great and the support makes a massive difference. Contributions to this campaign will not only inspire hope but are an investment in the future of these mothers and babies.
