SPARTA, NJ – Sparta High School senior Alex Cohen recently earned the rank of Eagle Scout having completed his project at the Sparta Methodist Church.

Having invested 93 hours, Cohen built an arbor with fences on the side leading to the labyrinth behind the church on the corner of 517 and Lafayette Road.

Cohen said he worked for Boy Scouts’ highest rank for two years, completing a journey that began when he was in kindergarten as a tiger scout.

The inspiration for the project came from the members of the church.  Cohen said he asked what they needed and they suggested the additions to the labyrinth.  He was assisted by friends and family and his fellow scouts from Troop 82.

“My grandmother donated all the money for the project as a way to give back to the church she has attended for many years,” Cohen said.

Cohen completed his Eagle Scout as he committed to attend Ramapo College of New Jersey, where he said he will pursue a degree in Communications and Art.  He plans to continue his ice hockey career at Ramapo as well.  He will have his Court of Honor to receive the rank of Eagle Scout sometime next year.

Cohen dedicated the arbor to his mother, Hope Binder Cohen.
