SPARTA, NJ – The Sussex County Police Chiefs Association announced having recently received two monetary donations at their meeting last week. In the Conservatory room of the Mohawk House the association’s president and Sparta Chief Neil Spidaletto announced a $6,500 donation from the First Energy Foundation and a $50,000 from an anonymous donor.
The funds will be used for training and equipment for officers throughout the county.
“The County Chief’s Association greatly appreciates the donation by JCP&L,” Spidaletto said. “The police agencies within Sussex County work very well with JCP&L and our Area Manager Jackie Espinoza. It’s important when storms hit and large amounts of power outages occur that we collectively work together to try to get power back to critical areas and then other outages associated with these storm events.”
Spidaletto said Espinoza and JCP&L are consistently training first responders on safety practices around downed power lines and poles. Police officers throughout the county are often on the scene of storm related damage, helping to divert traffic or close roads.
“First responders must be extra careful when working around these dangerous areas,” Spidaletto said.
The large anonymous donation came from “a big proponent and supporter of law enforcement,” according to Spidaletto. He said the donor supported “purchasing equipment and further training with a focus on helping to deescalate volatile situations.”
“The Sussex County Chiefs Association in conjunction with the Sussex County Prosecutors Office and Sheriff’s Department will continue to utilize these donations for training such as Crisis Intervention, School Security Response, De-escalation and Verbal Judo classes, physical restraint and self-defense classes,” Spidaletto said. “We are also researching the purchasing of less lethal force weapons, such as Tasers and other less lethal force weapons.”
