SPARTA, NJ - Two job families, soccer and baseball schedules and kids play dates, all claim the time and the stress of modern families. Service clubs, mostly worn down age, are still active and flying under the radar. As a member of the Sparta Kiwanis allow me to toot our horn about some of our projects.
The Sparta Kiwanis has sponsored a college scholarship program for students since 1986. This year fifteen students from Sparta, Pope John, and Sussex Tech shared a total of $18,000 in awards for college expenses. Since its inception, the Kiwanis Scholarship program has funded over $485,000 in awards.
Once each month you will find Kiwanis tending the shopping carts of donated food stuffs destined for the Sparta Ecumenical Food Pantry at the Presbyterian Church on Main Street. Kiwanis was privileged last year to deliver a total of 132 loaded baskets and $11,480 in cash as a testament to generosity of the community.
Last week the Kiwanis team held their bi-annual picnic for Sparta's seniors as at Knoll Heights. The afternoon social was attended by over 100 seniors. Hamburgers, hot dogs, salads and sodas were, as usual, the fare of the day that was enjoyed by all.
The Kiwanis give to the community and beyond. Each spring members plant red, white and blue flowers at the VFW monument, flag pole monument at Ungerman Field and along the sidewalk at the Sparta Library. Each autumn they host a free Fall Family Fun day, inviting the community to enjoy a day of pumpkins, cidar, donuts and entertainment.
Members ring the bell each year, in all kinds of weather for the Salvation Army. They raise funds with spring and fall flower sales and the annual duck races at Sparta Day.
Sparta enjoys the benefits from the service that clubs such as Kiwanis provide and we need your help to carry on this tradition of service to our community that has lasted over 70 years. Together we can do more. There is no restriction on who can join, only a willingness to give back to your community.
