SPARTA, NJ- Last month the Sparta Township Council recognized Mental Health Awareness month.  With no one at the meeting to accept the proclamation, it was simply read into the record.

At the last township council meeting Marjorie Stroshals accepted the proclamation on behalf of NAMI and the Sparta Woman's Club.

According to the proclamation, Mental Health Awareness Month has been observed since 1949 reaching people through various media to elevate the conversation about mental illness.  Strides have also been made in expanding mental health coverage the proclamation read.

The council members affirmed their pledge to support and encourage people living with mental illness to seek the help they need and to work to remove the stigma associated with mental illness.

Mayor Molly Whilesmith offered the proclamation.  Deputy Mayor Christine Quinn, last year spearheaded the initiative to designate Sparta a Stigma Free Town.
