SPARTA, NJ – The community turned out for a barbecue and ice cream hosted by the Sparta Police Department, Fire Department, Ambulance Squad, Dispatchers and CERT. The food was purchased by the Fraternal Order of Police and the other first responders.
Det. Sgt. Jeff McCarrick manned the grill offering hamburgers and hotdogs. McCarrick had also made a pot of pumpkin soup that got rave reviews. Sparta Police Officers served ice cream from Tranquility Farms, as well as ice cream from Windy Brow donated by Steve Scro.
Scro also donated the use of the facilities, the former Carl’s Auto Body.
Children enjoyed meeting super heroes in costumes as well as Sparta’s own super heroes. They were invited to explore the fire truck and ambulance on site and take a turn in the pretend jail.
Representatives from CERT or Community Emergency Response Team and NAMI or National Alliance of Mental Illness.
The Sparta Woman’s Club offered Vial of Life kits.
According to Police Chief Neil Spidaletto the National Night Out for Safety is usually held in August but they wanted to wait until most people were back from summer vacations.
