SPARTA, NJ – The Sparta Police Department delivered the proceeds from their No Shave November fundraiser to the doctors of the Sparta Regional Cancer Care Associates. On Thursday, Sparta Chief Neil Spidaletto, Det. Sgt. Terrence Mulligan, Officer Dave Pridham and Cpl. Mark Mastandrea met with Dr. Jumana Chatiwala, Dr. May Abdo-Matkiwsky and Bohdan Halibey to give them a check for $1975.
“You guys were the first to give us a donation but we didn’t yet have a foundation,” Halibey said. “You were the impedes to get it started.”
This year 22 members of the police department, one special officer, two dispatchers, one ACO and Sparta Township Councilman Dan Chiariello grew their beards and mustaches to get donations earmarked for the RCCA foundation. This year’s donation was made in honor of Devon Carbery, according to Spidaletto.
Halibey joked, he is about to retire but “didn’t move fast enough,” so he is in charge of the Regional Cancer Care Associates Charity.
The funds donated to the foundation are going toward a wellness center the practice is working to open, according to the Practice Administrator Nichelle Underwood.
“Our cancer patients would be able to go for a massage, nutritional counseling, dance and yoga, support groups and other services such as acupuncture free of charge,” she said.
Underwood said they currently offer yoga and light aerobics and supply lunch to patients two days a week. They hope to expand by opening a separate space for the wellness center and keep it free to cancer patience.
