SPARTA, NJ – A car accident led to drug charges for a Dover man with outstanding warrants last week. On July 17 around 1 p.m. Officer Michael Poon responded to the scene of the accident on Sparta Avenue, police said.
Poon spoke with the driver that caused the accident, Kenneth Verpent, 28, the officer smelled marijuana in the car, police said.
Verpent told Poon he had smoked earlier but there was no pot in the car. When the car was searched the officer found a ziplock bag of THC candy, police said.
Verpent was taken into custody and brought to Sparta Police Department headquarters for processing. Verpent was found to have an outstanding warrant from Dover. He was charged with possession of marijuana, careless driving, possession of a controlled dangerous substance in a motor vehicle, police report.
Verpent was issued a new court date in Dover and one in Sparta before he was released.
