SPARTA, NJ- A Montclair man is facing drunk driving charges after running over a fire hydrant. On April 14 around 8:45 p.m. Officer Erick Finley went to the scene of a one car accident on Lafayette Road, finding Michael Elchin II, 38, in a black Chevrolet pick up, police said.

Elchin had scrapes on his arms from the airbag but refused medical treatment, police said.

Elchin told Finley he had swerved to avoid hitting a deer, driving off the road.  He said he was able to get back onto the road but his truck was then disabled, police said.

Checking for damage to the truck, Finley saw that it was hung up on a fire hydrant, police said.

While speaking with Elchin, Finley suspected the driver had been drinking.  Finley saw an open bottle of alcohol in the truck.  Finley had Elchin perform field sobriety tests and then took him into custody, police said.

At the police station Elchin was processed.  After completing the breath test, Elchin was charged with DWI, careless driving, open container in a motor vehicle, failure to keep right, failure to produce documents, police said.

Elchin was given a court date and taken to Newton Medical Center to be evaluated.
