SPARTA, NJ – A Landing woman found in the middle of Route 15 is facing drunk driving charges.  On July 23 around 7:30 a.m. Sparta officer Erick Finley found 36-year-old Wendy Mittelstadt when he responded to reports of a car in the grassy media at the Sparta-Jefferson line, police said.

Mittelstadt refused treatment after being initially evaluated for injuries by Jefferson Township Ambulance Squad, police said.

The driver told Finley she had been hit and cut off by a black Mercedes.  She said this forced her into the guardrail and then the median but when Finley checked her car, there was no damage, police said.

When speaking with Mittelstadt, Finley smelled alcohol on her breath.  She performed field sobriety tests before being taken into custody and brought to Sparta Police Department Headquarters for processing, police said.

Mittelstadt was charged with DWI, careless driving and failing to maintain her lane.  After being charged she asked to be brought to Newton Medical Center for pain.  Sparta First Aid Squad brought Mittelstadt to the hospital, police said.
