SPARTA, NJ – An expired inspection sticker on a red Subaru caught the attention of Officer Taylor May on Limecrest Road.  On February 20 around 8:15 a.m. May stopped Benedict Burroughs, 32 of Newark police said.

May found that Burroughs’ license was suspended and he had two warrants out of Newark and one out of Irvington.  When May was placing Burroughs under arrest, he found that Burroughs had a purple container of pot on him, police said.

Burroughs was brought to Sparta Police Department Headquarters for processing.  He was charged with possession of marijuana, driving while suspended, failure to inspect, unclear plates and possession of a controlled dangerous substance in a motor vehicle, police said.

Newark and Irvington were contacted and both towns issued new court dates.  Burroughs was released with a court date in Sparta as well.
