SPARTA, NJ – A Maryland woman was charged with drunk driving after hitting another car and driving away. Officer Michael Poon followed up on calls to Sparta dispatch reporting an erratic hit and run driver. On August 5 around 9 p.m. Poon found Maureen Mead, 47 of Timonium, Maryland on Woodport Road near Route 15 police said.
The driver, having been hit by Mead on Route 15, followed her in a silver Chevorlet Malibu from Woodport Road to Main Street, when Mead pulled into a parking lot, police said.
Mead told Poon she was from out of town and was lost. She also said she did not know she had been in an accident. Poon smelled alcohol in the car while talking with the driver, police said.
Poon had Mead perform field sobriety tests and took her into custody. She was brought to Sparta Police Department Headquarters for processing. After breath testing, she was charged with DWI, careless driving, reckless driving, failure to keep right, failure to report an accident, leaving the scene of an accident, improper use of cellphone when driving. She was given a court date and released to a responsible party, police said.
