SPARTA, NJ – A man from the Bronx, New York threw a cup out the window of the car he was riding in, catching the attention of Sparta Police Officer Chris Favaro. On April 5, around 7 p.m. Favaro stopped a white Ford Explorer on Route 15, police said.
When Favaro approached the car, passenger Edson Meza-Alvarez, 29 rolled down his window. Favaro smelled marijuana in the car, police said.
Favaro asked Meza-Alvarez about the littering. The Bronx man told the officer he was pouring coffee out of the cup when it slipped from his hand, police said.
When asked about the smell of marijuana, Meza-Alvarez admitted he had some pot, police said.
SpA check of the credentials of the driver, Mr. Martinez-Guiterriz, the report came back that his license was suspended and he was unlicensed, police said.
Martinez-Guiterrez was charged with unlicensed driver, driving with a suspended license and failure to keep right. He was transported to Sparta Police Department Headquarters to arrange for a ride home, police said.
Meza-Alvarez was taken into custody and transported to Sparta Police Department Headquarters where he was charged with possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and littering from a vehicle, police said.
Both men were give court dates and released.
