SPARTA, NJ – Two men were sleeping on the shoulder on Route 15 south when Officer Brian Porter stopped to check on them.  On February 4 around 10:55 p.m. Richard Walko, 23 and Kevin Murray, 24 told the officer they were just tired from a day of hiking, so they stopped to take a nap, police said.

Porter smelled marijuana in the car.  The driver, Walko of Toms River, said that he and his passenger Murray of Barrington had smoked earlier in the day before their hike, police report.

Murray told Porter he had a Vape with a THC cartridge.  When Porter searched the car the officer found several drug paraphernalia items, additional vapes and several THC cartridges, police report.

THC or tetrahydrocannabinol is the main active ingredient of cannabis.  THC is psychoactive and give the feeling of being high according to the Wall Street Journal.

Both Murray and Walko were taken into custody and brought to Sparta Police Department Headquarters for processing.  Walko was charged with controlled dangerous substance in a motor vehicle, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia. 

Murray was charged with possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia.  Both men were given a court date and released.
