SPARTA, NJ – A woman from California had a lot of trouble by the time she stopped near the Blue Heron exit ramp from Route 15. On November 6 around 11 p.m. officers went to the exit ramp where Jefferson police had followed Katherine McNerney, 50, police said.
McNerney caught the attention of Jefferson police on Route 15 for driving erratically. Once the white Nissan SUV was pulled over, it rolled back, hitting the Jefferson police car, police said.
Sparta Cpl. Joseph Antonello was checking the damage to the cruiser when he saw that the front passenger side tire was missing from McNerney’s car. The tire was later found in Jefferson, police said.
The Long Beach, California resident was passed out behind the wheel. Officers smelled alcohol in the car and the officers could not wake McNerney, police said.
The officers provided medical assistance and oxygen while they waited for the paramedics. McNerney remained unconscious as she was brought to St. Clare’s Hospital, police said.
Antonello followed the ambulance and got a warrant for blood samples as part of the investigation, police said. McNerney was charged with DWI, careless driving and failure to provide drivers credentials. She remained in the hospital, police said.
The white Nissan was an Avis rental car. It was impounded and Avis was contacted to come pick up their car.
